What is Lauan Plywood ?

Updated June 5, 2013

Lauan Veneer Plywood is just another spelling of Luan Plywood. Although, it is a manufactured wood panel made from thin sheets of Lauan wood Veneer. It is widely used for wood products.

This wood is flexible, workable, re-usable and inexpensive. It usually can be manufactured locally. Plywood is most used instead of plain wood, because Plywood has a resistance to cracking, shrinkage and splitting. Plus, twisting and/or warping can be stopped because of the woods' high strength.

Layers of Lauan Wood, are called Vaneers, and are glued together with adjacent plies. These plies have their wood grain at right angles to each other, which are to form a composite material. The alternation of the grain is called cross-graining and has several important benefits.
One example: Lauan Plywood Vaneer reduces the tendency of most wood to split when being nailed at the edges. This is a benefit for many "do it yourself" jobs at the point of installing Lauan board Plywood.

Installing Luan Plywood

The best way to install Luan wood(Plywood) board is to first lay out the Luan wood on the floor, at any corner of the room. The Plywood would be in a single direction, the same way that any subfloor materials would be laid out. Leave a gap of about 1/16 inch between the walls and the Plywood panels. Use a staple gun, or screws to insert 1/4 inch staples into the boards. The boards should be at a half-foot apart from each other, being across from the surface of the Luan wood. Then again, insert the staples every couple of inches apart, which are along the edges of the project. To finish, install more Luan Plywood panels in a similar way, and then leave about 1/16 inch of a gap between the boards

Creating Do-It-Yourself Veneers for Luan Panelling or Plywood

Veneers are created by Layers of Luan Wood which are glued together, with adjacent plies having their wood grain at right angles to each other, to form a composite material. There alternation of the grain is called cross-graining and has several important benefits: Luan Plywood Vaneers reduce the tendency of wood to split when nailed at the edges, this is a benefit for many do it yourself jobs, especially when you consider that most "do-it-yourselfers" are novices in jobs for the first time.

Installing Wood Veneers for Laminate or Vinyl Flooring

When you install Luan Vaneers it is to begin with the project from the corner of the room, and work your way out with the Laun wood, moving in a single direction, or in a similar way that any subfloor materials have been laid.

You should make a space in the area of 1/16th of an inch from the walls and the plywood panels. Then use a nails, or screws to insert 1/4 inch staples at a half foot apart across the top of the Luan veneers, and then every couple of centimeters apart along the edge of the project. Install more Laun panels in a similar way, and then leave about 1/16 inch of a gap between the boards

What is Ebony Veneer?

Ebony Veneer is sourced from Macassar Ebony. This source of wood is in short supply and not easy to find. In regards to sourcing, there are many problems. Problems including the distance, hard travel conditions, extreme low density of the wood, and the rough terrain.

If you think this is all, you'll be mistaken. There are also other costs, which further increase the scarcity of the wood product. It is usually found in the tropics of South Asia, in diverse settings.

The majority of the source wood is short and shrubby in size.  It is not profitable for commercial logging operations to generate the sizes that would be required by commercial or residential "do-it-yourselfters."  So, this is why the material is very rare and hard to come by. The size category for Ebony Veneer panels is usually in the thickness of 6 x 8 inches . It has a quarter-sawn face and finished veneer quarters.
