Luan Wood Video Series

Luan Panels are used for flooring underlayment, underneath the vinyl or laminate flooring they are placed on the subfloor before you begin to roll out the floor covering. This provides some support for the flooring and gives it a finished look in addition to support. Luan is purchased in panels of plywood of different sizes that make it easy to transport and easy to install. A novice truely has the capacity to do much of the work with some simple instruction. What I have done on this page is list all you need to know about luan panels, and their proper installation.

Luan Wood Description

Luan Wood is made from several layers of thin sheets of material that are compressed together using a wood adhesive. The grain of the alternating wood is placed in the opposite direction of its next attached wood piece. This is how luan wood gets it strength, and in addition to this it is usually made around a solid core which is placed between luan plywood veneers which also increase the strength of the material for do it yourself home projects. Veneer wood is made of low quality mahogany wood. Luan is usually used for making furniture interiors, Doors and backing as well as for the underlayment of higher grade flooring materials such as Laminate, Vinyl flooring.

What are Luan Panels?

Luan Plywood Panels are manufactured wood panel made from thin sheets of luan wood veneer. It is the most widely used wood products.

It is flexible, inexpensive, workable, and re-usable, and usually can be manufactured locally. Plywood is used instead of plain wood because of plywood's resistance to cracking, shrinkage, splitting, and twisting/warping, and because of its generally high strength.

Luan Panels, are often called Vaneers, are glued together, with adjacent plies having their wood grain at right angles to each other, to form a composite material. There alternation of the grain is called cross-graining and has several important benefits: Lauan Plywood Panels and Vaneers reduce the tendency of wood to split when nailed at the edges, this is a benefit for many do it yourself jobs, especially when you consider that most do it yourself'ers are novices in jobs for the first time.
